Chennai: Woman Falls Into Open Stormwater Drain Pit, 2nd Incident In A Week

Two days ago, two women with disabilities fell into an under-construction stormwater drain and suffered injuries in Rajaji Salai.

A 55-year-old woman fell into an under-construction stormwater drain near Pammal on Thursday. This is the second incident wherein an unattended stormwater drain has created a threat to the residents in Chennai. On Friday, a stormwater drain was left open without any barricades or signboards near Pammal.

The residents had arranged wooden pieces to cross the two sides of the pit. On Friday, when the victim Vijayakumari was walking on a plank to cross the pit, she slipped and fell into it. In the impact, iron rods pierced her hands and legs. Vijayakumari was injured in the chest as well. The police did not register any case against St Thomas Mount-cum-Pallavaram Cantonment Board, as reported by Times of India.

Two days ago, two women with disabilities fell into an under-construction stormwater drain and suffered injuries in Rajaji Salai. The Kothavalchavadi Traffic Investigation Wing police identified the victims as N Sridevi and S Kalaivani, both from Tondiarpet.

Both women were coming home on Monday after attending a labour welfare conference in Koyambedu. Sridevi was riding the specialised two-wheeler while Kalaivani was riding a pillion. An autorickshaw was riding in front of them in Rajaji Salai and when he stopped suddenly, Sridevi put the brakes but she lost control and fell into the under-construction stormwater drain along with Kalaivani.

Sridevi sustained neck injuries from the protruding rods, whereas Kalaivani incurred minor injuries. Both were promptly taken to the Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital for medical treatment. As per the authorities, both women's conditions are currently stable. Police are actively investigating the incident and reviewing CCTV footage from the surrounding area.

After the incident, corporation officials erected barricades to prevent untoward incidents, as reported by The New Indian Express, quoting sources.
