Chennai Police Calls Tweet On Beef As ‘Unnecessary’, Deletes Post After Backlash

The Chennai police also apologized for posting the tweet on the Twitterati's page by mistake.

Chennai: The Greater Chennai police ran into a controversy on social media after they called a tweet on beef “unnecessary” on Thursday. However, the Chennai police soon deleted the tweet after backlash and retracted that the reply was not about the choice of food.

In a tweet on Thursday, a Twitter user Abubacker posted an image of beef shawarma with the caption "beef". However, hours later, a reply to the tweet by Greater Chennai Police said, "Such a post is unnecessary here."

After the post, several people showed their opposition to Chennai police for making the comment and questioned the police for failing to act on many other abusive posts.

DMK MP Senthilkumar quoting the tweet said, "Who handles this ID. Why what is wrong? Why is @chennaipolice commenting on what to post and what to eat? This is unnecessary advice."

The GCP then tweeted, "Since the Tweet you posted was retweeted on the Chennai Police Department's @chennaipolice_ page, the comment was made on the tweet on grounds that private posts should be avoided on Twitter pages for public use."

"But we apologize for posting this on your page by mistake. It's not about their personal food preferences," it said.
