Cauvery Water Row: BJP Wants To Create Rift Between DMK And Congress, Says TKS Elangovan

DMK leader TKS Elangovan said that the Central Water Commission has to ensure that Karnataka release water as directed by the Supreme Court.

Rivers cannot be owned by any state so Karnataka should provide water to Tamil Nadu, said DMK leader TKS Elangovan on Wednesday. He said that sharing water was an internationally agreed settlement and the lower riparian lands cannot be denied water. Further, accusing the BJP of trying to create a rift between DMK and Congress, Elangovan said that the BJP wanted to convert the issue into a problem between two political parties.

On the Cauvery water issue, DMK leader TKS Elangovan said, "They (Karnataka) have to release water...Rivers cannot be owned by any state... They have to provide water. It is an internationally agreed settlement that water cannot be denied to lower riparian lands."

"The BJP wants to create a divide between the DMK and Congress... It is a matter between two states. They want to convert this issue between two political parties...The Central Water Commission has to ensure that, as directed by the Supreme Court, they release water," he said.

The statement of the DMK leader came on the day several farmers unions gathered together to organise the bandh in Tamil Nadu against Karnataka over Cauvery row.

The Delta farmers in Tamil Nadu have called for a complete bandh in Thiruvarur to protest against Karnataka government's failure to release adequate water for the state. A few other organisations are also staging a protest in Nagapattinam.

Most of the shops have downed their shutters in Thiruvarur and Pudukottai districts.
