The Yogi Adityanath government has withdrawn 868 cases registered against farmers for stubble burning.
New Delhi: Ahead of the Uttar Pradesh Elections, the Yogi Adityanath government has withdrawn 868 cases of stubble burning against farmers. The order comes two weeks after Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath had announced that the government will withdraw cases of stubble burning pending against the farmers.
The order was issued on Wednesday night by Additional Chief Secretary Awanish Kumar Awasthi
Awasthi said that farmers play an important role in the development of the country. Hence, the government has decided to withdraw 868 cases registered against farmers for stubble burning.
As per records available with the police, around 1,500 FIRs were lodged against farmers across 38 districts of the state for stubble burning.
Of these, charge sheets were filed in 868 cases while the remaining were either closed with a final report for the absence of evidence or expunged for some reason.
UP CM Yogi Adityanath had announced this last month during his interaction with farmers in western Uttar Pradesh. The chief minister also said that apart from withdrawing the case, the penalty imposed on farmers will also be waived.
The Chief Minister had held talks with farmers on various issues like payment for cane and increasing the procurement price for the cane. It was during this conversation that someone raised the complaint on the case of stubble burning. After the conversation, the Chief Minister assured to withdraw all such cases. The Chief Minister said that fines on farmers will also be scrapped.
