Char Dham Yatra: 10,000 People Stranded On Highway Leading To Yamunotri Temple After Safety Wall Collapses

The traffic has been stopped on the highway and 10,000 people are stuck in different places on the highway.

New Delhi: Nearly 10,000 people are reportedly stuck at the Rishikesh-Yamunotri National Highway after a security wall of the highway leading to the Yamunotri temple in Uttarakhand collapsed on Saturday.

According to a report by India Today, the traffic has been stopped on the highway and 10,000 people are stuck in different places on the highway.

As per India Today sources, it may take three days to open the highway. The administration is trying to evacuate the passengers in smaller vehicles. However, people who have come from far-off places in heavy vehicles are unable to leave. Many vehicles are also stuck at Jankichatti.

The highway was opened for the people on Thursday after being shut for nearly 24 hours because of heavy rains on Wednesday. Due to the heavy rains, a stretch of road between Sayanachatti and Ranachatti was washed away on Wednesday.

On Wednesday, a 15-meter stretch of the highway had caved in leaving nearly 3,000 passengers stranded.

“15-meter road stretch on the Yamunotri national highway between Rana Chatti and Sayana Chatti caved in resulting in the suspension of traffic movement of buses and other heavy vehicles carrying pilgrims while the smaller vehicles were able to pass through on the road,” said an official, HT reported.

The officials also added, “One tractor trolley, two JCB machines, one tipper, one Pokland, and 15 labourers were rushed to the spot and it is likely that the road will be opened for all kinds of traffic by Thursday evening.”

The Char Dham yatra had begun on May 3 after a gap of almost two years due to the pandemic.
