Atiq, Ashraf Ahmed Shot Dead HIGHLIGHTS: Atiq Ahmed, an Uttar Pradesh gangster sought in at least 100 criminal cases, and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were slain today (April 15) while being accompanied by police to a medical check-up in Prayagraj. Atiq and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were killed while speaking with the media. The assassins who killed gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf on Saturday night in front of police and the media disguised themselves as journalists, with one even carrying a microphone and an ID. The three shooters, Lavlesh Tiwari, Sunny, and Arun Maurya, all surrendered to police on the scene.
Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister and Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav said on Saturday that crime in the state has peaked and criminal morale is high. He expressed concern, saying that if someone can be killed by openly firing amidst a police security cordon, what about the general public's safety? As a result, a fearful atmosphere has been created among the general public, and it appears that some people are deliberately creating such an atmosphere, he said in a tweet in Hindi.
“Both Atiq and his brother were in police custody. He was handcuffed. Jai Shri Ram slogans were also raised. The killing of both is the failure of Yogi's law and order system. Those celebrating the encounter are also responsible for this murder,” Owaisi said.
Atiq and members of his family had earlier repeatedly asked the courts for protection, claiming they had been receiving threats, and that their lives were in danger. Atiq had also knocked on the Supreme Court's doors to request protection while being held in detention for the murder of Umesh Pal.
'Easy Way Out, Hard To Follow Law': Rajasthan CM Gehlot Slams UP Govt Over Atiq, Ashraf Killing
On the killing of gangster-turned-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf in police custody, Rajasthan chief minister Ashok Gehlot said on Sunday that action should be taken against criminals in accordance with the law.
"What is happening in UP is the easy way out. The difficult way is to follow the law and ensure justice," he explained.
Gehlot also slammed the BJP's Central Leadership, claiming that winning elections is Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah's only concern and that they are unconcerned about the public. (PTI Input)

National Conference Leader Calls For Independent Probe Into Atiq Ahmad's Killing
National Conference leader Sheikh Mustafa Kamal on Sunday called for an independent probe into the killings of gangster-politician Atiq Ahmad and his brother Ashraf Ahmad in Uttar Pradesh.
"There should be an independent probe into the encounter. There are fingers being pointed already," Kamal told reporters in Anantnag district. He said in the absence of a credible probe, it will be "presumed that the gangster-turned-politician and his brother were eliminated at the behest of the UP government". (PTI Input)

PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti claimed on Sunday that the killing of Atiq Ahmad and his brother in Uttar Pradesh was a "clever diversionary tactic" to divert attention away from former Jammu and Kashmir governor Satyapal Malik's "revelations" about the Pulwama attack.
Malik claimed in an interview with a news outlet that security lapses led to the February 2019 Pulwama attack, which killed 40 CRPF jawans.
