Maharashtra Rain: Local Trains Services Hit, Schools Closed. Alerts Issued For Mumbai, Pune As More Downpour Predicted — 10 Points

Heavy rains lashed parts of Maharashtra causing waterlogging on roads and railway tracks. IMD has predicted more rain in several districts in the coming days.

Rain continues to batter several states across the country disrupting normal life immensely and creating trouble for the general masses. Parts of Maharashtra continue to witness rainfall forcing local trains to halt services in Mumbai while waterlogging continued at several other areas due to heavy downpours. IMD has issued red and orange alerts for some of the districts in the state and predicted more showers in the coming days. Here are the top ten points on Maharashtra rain fury:

• The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a 'Red' alert for Palghar and Raigad districts while an 'Orange' alert has been sounded for Mumbai as heavy rain lashed parts of Maharashtra. One NDRF team has been deployed in Palghar and Raigad each. Chandrapur and Raigad District Collectors declared a holiday for all schools and colleges in the districts on Wednesday in view of heavy rains.  

 

• IMD has also issued an 'Orange' Alert for Thane, Mumbai and Ratnagiri on Wednesday, reported news agency ANI. Badlapur-Ambernath railway tracks were also closed due to severe waterlogging after heavy rainfall in parts of the city, said Central Railway CPRO. 

 

• As per PTI, local train services between Badlapur and Ambarnath section in Maharashtra's Thane district came to a halt due to water-logging on railway tracks after heavy rains, officials said. Mumbai and neighbouring Thane received heavy downpour on Wednesday morning, reported PTI. Badlapur-Ambarnath section (UP + DOWN) closed from 11.05 hrs for traffic due to water-logging, Central Railway's chief public relations officer Dr Shivraj Manaspure said. Rail tracks between Badlapur and Ambarnath stations got inundated at around 10.30 am, as per sources. 

 

• Meanwhile, train services on the Panvel-Belapur Harbour Line route, which were earlier affected to a point failure at Panvel at 9.40 am, were restored by 10 am, Railway's chief public relations officer Dr Shivraj Manaspure was quoted as saying by PTI. 

 

• Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar instructed the District Collectors to take precautionary measures immediately and deploy relief work and disaster management teams in view of the incessant rainfall in the city. 

 

• IMD upgraded the rain alert for the Pune district to red while indicating that heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely to happen in the next 24 hours. As per the Times Now, the red alert in Pune is in effect from 12:00 PM on July 19, 2023. As per the IMD, Pune could receive rainfall of up to 20 cm in the next 24 hours. In the past few days, the district has already witnessed heavy rains in the past few days. IMD has warned that the situation might worsen in the coming hours. 

 

• The weather department has issued an 'orange' alert for Mumbai as heavy rains lashed the city. IMD predicted heavy to very heavy showers at some places during the day, as per PTI. Bus services of the Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking were running as per their proper routes and there was no diversion, a civic official said. 

 

• IMD scientist Sunil Kamble said, "We issued a red alert for the Raigad district and an orange alert for Mumbai. Heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Raigad and Mumbai in the coming days." 

 

• A civic official said the IMD Mumbai predicted heavy rainfall in the city and suburbs with a possibility of very heavy rainfall at a few places in the next 24 hours, stated the PTI report.  

 

• The local civic body said that a high tide of 4.23 meters would occur in the sea at 1.23 pm. According to PTI, which cited officials, the eastern and western suburbs of the city received an average rainfall of 47.42 mm, 50.04 mm respectively, in the  24-hour period ending at 8.30 am Wednesday.
