Kotkapura Firing Case: Ex-CM Parkash Singh Badal Granted Anticipatory Bail, Sukhbir Singh Bail Plea Canceled
Former Punjab CM Parkash Badal has been granted bail in the Kotkapura firing case.
Former Punjab CM Parkash Badal has been granted bail in the Kotkapura firing case while the bail plea of Sukhbir Singh has been cancelled.
On February 24, the Special Investigation Team led by ADGP LK Yadav filed a chargesheet in the Kotkapura firing case in Faridkot court.
The court of judicial magistrate first class Ajaypal Singh had issued a notice on March 6 against eight people mentioned in the chargesheet to be present before the court on March 23.
Arguments went on for over two hours at the hearing by additional sessions judge Rajiv Kalra. Parkash Badal and his son Sukhbir were nominated as co-accused in the 2015 Kotkapura police firing case in which some people who were protesting against a series of sacrilege incidents were injured, Hindustan Times reported.
On Tuesday, the defence counsel sought anticipatory bail on the ground that the accused had appeared before a special investigation team (SIT) of the Punjab Police for questioning.
The SIT’s legal team insisted on the rejection of the bail claiming the former CM and Sukhbir, a Ferozepur MP, were part of the alleged conspiracy.
LK Yadav had earlier asked for people to come forward and share information which could have an impact on the case by meeting him in his office in Chandigarh on March 16, 23 and 30.
A WhatsApp number and an email address were also shared for people to shate any information related to the case. He also expressed his gratitude to the people of Punjab for cooperating with the SIT.
The incidents pertain to the theft of a copy of the Guru Granth Sahib, handwritten sacrilegious posters, and pages of the holy book being torn at Bargari in Faridkot in 2015.
Follwing massive protests, two people were killed at Behbal Kalan and a few injured at Kotkapura in police firing.
