Heavy Rain Likely To Batter Karnataka, IMD Issues Red Alert; Holiday Declared In Several Districts

In Karnataka, several districts, including Udupi, Dakshina Kannada, and Dharwad, have declared rain holidays for education institutions.

The IMD forecasts heavy to extremely heavy rains and strong winds, especially in central and coastal regions.

Karnataka is bracing for intense rainfall over the next week, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a seven-day warning for nearly all districts in the state, following the reactivation of the southwest monsoon after a two-week lull. The coastal Karnataka is under red alert till June 15, 2025.

Karnataka Weather Update

The IMD bulletin forecasts heavy to very heavy rains accompanied by strong winds (up to 60 kmph) across central and coastal Karnataka. Shivamogga and Chikkamagaluru districts are expected to see particularly intense rainfall, while Davangere, Ballari, and Vijayanagar will experience heavy showers with winds up to 50 kmph.

Coastal districts like Dakshina Kannada, Uttara Kannada, and Udupi may face extremely heavy rainfall with winds in the range of 30–40 kmph. In southern Karnataka, districts such as Mysuru, Tumakuru, Bengaluru (Urban and Rural), Hassan, Ramanagara, Mandya, and Chamarajanagar will witness moderate to heavy rainfall.

In response to the IMD's warnings, district administrations have begun declaring rain holidays for schools and colleges.

Bengaluru Weather Update 

In Bengaluru, the forecast indicates a generally cloudy sky with light to moderate showers and isolated heavy rain. Wind speeds are expected to reach 40–50 kmph, while temperatures are likely to hover around 30°C (max) and 21°C (min).

Karnataka Rain Holidays

Udupi district has shut all Anganwadi centres, primary and secondary schools, and both government-aided and private institutions on Thursday, June 12, citing heavy rains. Dakshina Kannada has followed suit, with Deputy Commissioner MP Mullai Muhilan announcing a one-day holiday for all schools and Anganwadis, as per a report on News 18.

In Dharwad, Deputy Commissioner Divya Prabhu has declared a holiday for Anganwadis, schools, PU colleges, and degree colleges on the same day, June 12.

Authorities have urged the public to stay alert, avoid unnecessary travel in vulnerable areas, and follow local advisories as the rain spell is expected to continue through next week.
