Gujarat Polls Delayed As Modi Has To Inaugurate More Bridges Like The One In Morbi: Congress President Kharge

The Election Commission of India is likely to announce the dates for the Gujarat Assembly Election by this week while there is speculation that the polls can be held in two phases.

New Delhi: Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, who joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra on Tuesday, said Gujarat polls are delayed as Prime Minister Narendra Modi has to inaugurate more bridges like the one that fell in Morbi.

"Accountability must be set for the loss of 135 lives in the #MorbiBridgeCollapse. The conduct of the municipality, Pvt. firm and officials must be thoroughly investigated. A time-bound judicial inquiry led by a sitting SC/HC Judge is the only recourse," Kharge said in his Tweet.

"Congress will give a non-BJP government under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi," the Congress president said.

The Election Commission of India is likely to announce the dates for the Gujarat Assembly Election by this week while there is speculation that the polls can be held in two phases.

Kharge joined the Yatra at its final destination for the day at the Indira Gandhi statue on Necklace Road where a street corner meeting was held. The last time Kharge participated in the Yatra was on October 16 in Karnataka's Bellary. He had joined Gandhi in Bellary for the Yatra and later addressed a public meeting there.

Later in the day, Rahul Gandhi unfurled the tricolour amidst a massive crowd at the congested Charminar locality. Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh, senior leader Digvijaya Singh and Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee chief Revanth Reddy were among those present at the event, PTI reported.

Gandhi also paid floral tributes to his father Rajiv Gandhi's photograph on the stage.

After covering Narayanpet, Mahabubnagar and Rangareddy districts, the yatra entered Hyderabad on the seventh day of its journey in Telangana.

The 'Bharat Jodo Yatra' resumed from Matha Temple in Shamshabad on Tuesday morning and halted at the Legacy Palace at Bahadurpura in Hyderabad for an afternoon break. The yatra's night halt will be at Gandhi Ideology Centre in Bowenpally.
