Chandigarh Mayor Election Today, Direct Fight Between BJP, AAP As Congress Walks Out Of Race
Both BJP and AAP have 14 councillors each while Congress, which has decided not to take part in the election, has 6 councillors.
Bharatiya Janta Party and the Aam Aadmi Party are having a direct contest in the Chandigarh mayoral election, set to take place on Tuesday. The election of the deputy mayor is also slated along with the mayor’s seat.
Both BJP and AAP have 14 councillors each while Congress, which has decided not to take part in the election, has 6 councillors. Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) also has one councillor.
In the municipal elections held in December 2021, AAP emerged as the single largest party after it won 14 wards. BJP had claimed 12 wards in the civic body while Congress won eight and SAD won one.
However, Congress’ Harpreet Kaur Babla and Gurcharan Jeet Singh Kala joined the BJP days before the mayoral election. Now that both BJP and AAP have the same number of councillors with them, it would be interesting to see which party claims the position of mayor and deouty mayor.
Chandigarh MP Kirron Kher is also an ex-officio member of the municipal corporation of the Union Territory and she also votes like any other councillors in the process.
