Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday spoke to the women's hockey team to praise their stellar show in the biggest sporting event of the world.
The Indian women's hockey team played their hearts out but missed out on winning a historic bronze medal at the ongoing Tokyo Olympics 2020 after losing 3-4 against World No. 4 Great Britain on Friday. At one point in the game, Britain had taken a 2-0 lead But then the Indian eves staged a great comeback and scored three goals within four minutes to take a 3-2 lead.
However, Britain bounced back in the third quarter and finally took the lead in the fourth quarter. After this, India tried their best to score the equaliser and take the game for a shootout but they failed and eventually missed out on winning the bronze medal for the first time in the history of Olympics.
The Indian women's hockey team might have lost the game but they surely were successful in winning hearts and inspiring millions of girls to take up the sport. After this defeat, coach Sjored Marijne too was seen consoling his team. He took to Twitter to say that the team may have missed out on winning a medal, but he feels that his team has achieved something bigger.
"We did not win a medal, but I think we have won something bigger. We have made Indians proud again and we inspired millions of girls that dreams CAN come true as long as you work hard for it and believe it! Thanks for all the support!," he tweeted.
