On Tuesday (August 27), Jay Shah was elected unopposed as the new chairman of the International Cricket Council. With this appointment, he became the fifth Indian to hold the position of ICC President, following in the footsteps of Jagmohan Dalmiya, Sharad Pawar, N Srinivasan, and Shashank Manohar.
The timing of Shah's elevation to ICC Chairman is particularly opportune, as he is set to undergo a mandatory cooling-off period from 2025 to 2028.
As per the BCCI constitution, office-bearers can serve up to 18 years—nine years with the national board and nine with the state unit. However, they can only hold a position for a maximum of six consecutive years before taking a mandatory three-year break.
Jay Shah could potentially serve two consecutive terms as ICC Chairman and then return to become BCCI President in 2028.
