'Historic Day & A Landmark Moment': Sachin, Sehwag Remembers India's Historic 1983 World Cup Win

Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag and many other cricketers have shared posts on social media on the completion of 39 years of India becoming the world champion for the first time.

New Delhi: On this day on 25 June 1983, Indian cricket team lifted the 1983 World Cup trophy for the first time under the captaincy of Kapil Dev. In the final match played at Lord's ground, India defeated West Indies by 43 runs. The Windies team had earlier won the World Cup in 1975 and 1979, and that's why they were considered to be strong contenders for victory in the final against India. However, India clinched their maiden World Cup trophy on the back of a superb bowling performance.

39 years ago, on this day, Kapil Dev became the first Indian captain to lift the World Cup trophy. A 24 years 170 days old Kapil Dev was also the youngest captain to win the prestigious title.

This historic victory of India in the 1983 World Cup final made a big positive impact on many young cricketers as well as fans. Seeing India becoming the world champion, many young cricketers dreamed of making a career in this sport.

'Master Blaster' Sachin Tendulkar also saw Team India lifting the World Cup trophy for the first time when he was 10-years-old, and 6 years later he managed to make his place in the Indian team.
