Journalist Robbed While Covering FIFA, Cops Ask If She Wants Thief ‘Jailed For 5 Years Or Deported’
The reporter said that she was shocked at what the police asked her and said that she only asked them to get her belongings back to her.
A journalist from Argentina, who is in Qatar to cover the FIFA World Cup 2022, became part of an interesting news after her belongings got stolen during live coverage. Reporter Dominique Metzger was reporting live from Qatar when she said that her handbag, containing money, documents, and credit cards, was stolen.
While the incident came as a shock to Metzger, it was something that happened after it that left the journalist speechless. The reporter said that she went to the women only area in Doha police station to report about the incident and was shocked with what the police asked her.
She said, “The policewoman said to me: ‘We have high-tech cameras everywhere and we are going to locate him [the thief] with face detection. What do you want the justice system to do when we find him?”’
Dominique said when she asked them what they meant, the police clarified what punishment she would want them to give to the thief.
“Do you want him to be sentenced to five years in prison? Do you want him to be deported?”, the police asked.
“They told me, ‘What do you want justice to do about this?’” Metzger told TN, according to the Evening Standard. “We will find the wallet. … We have cameras everywhere; high-tech cameras and we will find the thief with face detection technology. What do you want [the] justice system to do with them when they are found?’
Metzger said that she did not request a punishment but only asked for her belongings to be returned.
“… I told them I just want my wallet back, I won’t be making the decision for the justice system,” she said, reported the NY Post.
Sharing about the entire incident on her Instagram stories, she also claimed to notice ‘cultural differences’ straightway in the police station.
