A video of the 2022 FIFA World Cup winning goalkeeper, recreating the infamous gesture went viral on social media. The Aston Villa goalkeeper was one of the match-defining performers for Messi-starrer Argentina in a thrilling FIFA WC Final. Martinez heroics were crucial in delivering a third title for Argentina during the Qatar tournament last year. He was adjudged as the winner of the Golden Glove award but a massive controversy erupted after what he did on stage upon receiving the trophy. Emiliano Martinez arrived in India at the Mohun Bagan ground, the oldest football club of the continent, for the inauguration of the Kolkata Police Friendship Cup. On Monday, the star footballer received a grand reception from his die-hard fanbase at Kolkata's Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport. A huge crowd was present at the airport to welcome the World Cup winner, who arrived in Kolkata for a two-day visit.
Martinez currently plays for English football club Aston Villa. Along with FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar, Martinez won the Golden Glove Award in the 2021 Copa America -- the tournament which was also won by Argentina. Argentina and Lionel Messi have a huge fan following in Kolkata.
Legendary footballers Pele and Diego Maradona have also arrived in India. Pele visited Kolkata in the 1970s while Maradona in 2008.
