Signing Of Eric Dier To Act As A Major Boost For Bavarians
The signing provides a much needed boost to their backline as ever since the departure of key centre backs such as Niklas Sule, David Alaba, and Mats Hummels, Bayern have had constant problems at the back either due to inconistent performances from players like Upamecano or with the injury issues.
This season, Bayern have made a terrific start to their season and at the halfway, they sit second in the table, behind an unbeaten Xabi Alonso-inspired Bayer Leverkusen. The six-time European champions have injury issues at the back, with Noussair Mazraoui and Bouna Sarr both out injured.
The lack of options at the back have led Thomas Tuchel to use Matthis De Ligt and Dyot Upamecano in almost every match this season. The signing of Eric Dier is of a much relief to Thomas Tuchel and the German coach expressed his delightment in a statement in an interview today.
"He's here in the city and we're trying to finalize a move to have him as another option at centre-back. We'll wait until everything is done because from experience I know that everything can still fall through at the last minute," said Thomas Tuchel.
"He's a specialist at centre-back. He has also played as a #6 in the Premier League, but not anymore for a long time. We're getting him for the centre-back position, can play right or left centre-back as well as in back 3. We got him mainly so Leon Goretzka can be free to play in midfield and doesn't have to switch to centre-back anymore. Regarding other positions, we'll see what happens," he added.
