India vs England ODI series is se to commence this Thursday, and all eyes will be on the out-of-form Virat Kohli, who is heavily struggling to regain his midas touch. The Delhi-born batsman is a Modern Era great, but has found it tough to get going since the start of 2024.
The rare bright moments for the right-handed batsman came in the T20 World Cup 2024 Final, where he smashed a sluggish yet match-saving 76 off 59, and later in the year, ended his wait for an 81st international ton by scoring an unbeaten 100 against Australia at Perth.
However, the downhall has been unreal for Virat Kohli in ODI's, who went from scoring 5 consecutive 50+ scores, to registering the scores of 24, 14, and 20 in his last three outings.
Virat Kohli's Last ODI Appearance
The last time Virat Kohli featured in an ODI was way back in August 2024, during the Sri Lanka Vs India, 3rd ODI. Hosts Sri Lanka managed to score 248 runs on a difficult surface, and the total, seeing the current conditions back then, was a fightable one.
India made an excellent start, in their quest to save the ODI series. However, the visitors lost Shubman Gill at the score of 37 after 4.3 overs. The scoring rate was not the problem, but the tendency of batters to take unnecessary risk, as India went from 37/0 to 138 all-out in no time. It merely took Sri Lanka 26.1 overs to bundle out the Indian team.
Dunith Wellalage, once again, proved his excellence against Indian by grabbing a five-wicket haul.
Virat Kohli, who had failed in the first two ODI's, was under severe pressure to perform, but failed to do so. The Indian legend scored 20 runs off 18 deliveries, which included 4 boundaries, before he was dismissed by Dunith Wellagale via an LBW shout.
The 2nd highest run-scorer for India in ODI's ended his series with an average of 19.33, as his 3 innings combined for only 58 runs.
