Argentina legend Lionel Messi, on Sunday, after 16 years of trying, finally added that 'one trophy' missing from his illustrious cabinet as La Albiceleste secured a historic win over defending champions France in a dramatic FIFA World Cup 2022 final at the Lusail Stadium on Sunday, December 18.
Argentina had doubled their lead in the first-half and it seemed that they would easily take home the most-coveted title before the finale witnessed a dramatic twist in the 81st minute. Kylian Mbappe's brace, back-to-back goals within 97 seconds, changed the complexion of the game. Messi's 2nd goal of the night helped Argentina score their 3rd goal to take the lead in the 109th minute but Mbappe struck again to bring France back level to 3-3. However, Argentina's goalkeeper Martinez saved the day to seal a 4-3 win for his team in the penalty shootout.
