Star dunes, believed to be the largest and tallest dunes on Earth, are mysterious desert structures. For the first time, scientists have decoded the secrets of formation of these desert giants.

Scientists were surprised to learn that the Lala Lallia Star Dune in Erg Chebbi, Sahara Desert, Morocco, one of the oldest known star dunes, was formed about 13,000 years ago. Earlier, scientists believed that dunes were far older.
