Amid JN.1 Scare, India Logs 797 New Cases Of Covid-19, Highest In 225 Days
India logged 797 new cases of Covid-19 in the past 24 hours. This is the highest number of cases recorded in a period of 24 hours in the past 225 days. Five deaths were also recorded since yesterday.
India logged 797 new cases of Covid-19 and five deaths due to the virus on Friday, the highest in 225 days. The active caseload of Covid stood at 4,091, as per the data of the Health Ministry. Out of the five new fatalities that were recorded in the past 24 hours, two were from Kerala and one each from Maharashtra, Puducherry and Tamil Nadu. The last India recorded such a high number of cases in a span of 24 hours was on May 19 when it logged 865 new cases, as reported by news agency PTI.
News agency ANI while citing sources reported that a total of 145 cases of JN.1 sub-variant of Covid-19 have been reported till 28th December. These samples were collected between 21 November and 18th December 2023.

The number of daily cases being logged had dropped to just double digits till December 5 but the cases started to see an upward trend again after the emergence of the new sub-variant of the virus, JN.1. Cold weather conditions across the nation also in a way help in the increase of the spread of virus.
Earlier in 2020, at the peak of the pandemic, the daily numbers of cases were in lakhs. India witnessed more than 4.5 crore people getting infected and over 5.3 lakh deaths in about four years since then across the country, as reported by PTI.

The number of people who recuperated from the virus stood at over 4.4 crores and the national recovery rate was recorded at 98.81 per cent, as per the data of the Health Ministry.
So far, 220.67 crore doses of Covid-19 vaccines have been administered in the country, according to the Ministry's data.
