The Importance Of Surya (Sun) Worship:

The Sun, regarded as the king of planets in Vedic astrology, holds a vital role in Hindu worship. Any auspicious task begins with the invocation of the five deities, including Surya (Sun God). According to the experts, worshipping the Sun helps eliminate planetary defects (Graha Dosha) and ensures harmony in family life, success, respect, and peace. The Bhavishya Purana highlights the importance of Surya worship. In a conversation, Lord Krishna explained to his son Samba that the Sun is the only visible deity. Those who worship Surya with devotion see their desires fulfilled.

Surya In Vedas And Upanishads

According to the astrologers, both the Atharvaveda and Suryopanishad describe the Sun as the ultimate divine entity (Parabrahma). Scriptures mention that during Paush month, the Sun radiates warmth with 11,000 rays, bringing relief from severe winter. The Sun's red hue is compared to blood, and its divine attributes include power, knowledge, wealth, and detachment, making Surya an embodiment of divinity.

Rituals To Follow In Paush Month:

The Aditya Purana prescribes specific practices for Sundays during Paush month:

  • Offer water to the Sun in a copper vessel mixed with red sandalwood and red flowers. Chant the "Vishnave Namah" mantra while doing so.
  • Observe a day-long fast, avoiding salt in meals and consuming only fruits (Phalahar) if possible.
  • Prepare til-chawal khichdi (sesame and rice dish) as an offering to the Sun.
  • It is believed that these rituals enhance one’s aura and energy. Additionally, taking holy dips in rivers during Paush is said to grant spiritual merit and fulfill all desires.
  • This month offers a divine opportunity to align with traditions, seek blessings, and purify one’s body and mind through prayer and self-discipline.
