What Is Kalpvas?

Kalpvas is a spiritual practice aimed at self-development and earning virtue. According to the Mahabharata, performing Kalpvas for 100 years is equivalent to the merit gained through intense penance. By observing Kalpvas with dedication, one can attain desired outcomes and gain liberation from the bondage of birth and rebirth. During Kalpvas, one must regularly worship the Sun, chant mantras of Lord Vishnu, Shiva, and the Goddess. Reading sacred texts like the Bhagavad Gita and Ramayana, singing devotional songs, engaging in spiritual practices, and attending satsangs are also part of the routine. Additionally, one must avoid anger, greed, ego, and violence during this period.

Who Can Observe Kalpvas?

There is no age restriction for observing Kalpvas. People of any age can follow its rules. However, it is particularly suited for those who have freed themselves from worldly attachments and have fulfilled their responsibilities. This is because a person bound by responsibilities may find it difficult to control their senses, while Kalpvas serves as a means for the transformation of both the body and the soul.

Can Kalpvas Be Observed Outside Of Kumbh?

Kalpvas is performed for spiritual purification and liberation, and it can be observed outside of the Kumbh as well. However, the significance of Kalpvas performed during Kumbh is many times greater. According to the Mahabharata, Kalpvas performed in the month of Magha is considered as meritorious as doing penance without food for 100 years. You can also observe Kalpvas by taking a break from your daily routine and following its rules. This will bring physical and mental freshness and energy. Kalpvas can be observed for 3 days, 7 days, 15 days, 30 days, 45 days, three months, six months, six years, twelve years, or even for a lifetime.
