Garud Puran: Understanding The Significance Of Death Feast And Thirteenth Day Rituals In The Garud Puran And Gita

Garud Puran: Various religious rituals are performed for the peace of the soul for 13 days after death. Should one partake in the thirteenth-day feast? Learn what the Garud Puran and Gita say.

Garud Puran: In Hinduism, it is customary to conduct a thirteenth-day feast for the peace of the soul after a person's death. The tradition of Brahmbhoj on the thirteenth day has been followed since ancient times, but it is now referred to as 'death feast.'

According to Hinduism, among the 16 rites, the last ritual is the last rites, Antyesti. On the twelfth day, scriptures mention that only Brahmins should be offered a feast. The tradition of a death feast does not exist in Sanatan Dharma. Instead, it is recommended to offer a feast to Brahmins according to one's capacity and donate for the peace of the deceased's soul. This is known as Brahmbhoj.

Garud Puran: Is Death Feast A Sin?

The Garud Puran mentions that after death, the soul remains with its family members at home until the thirteenth day. After this, the soul begins its journey to the afterlife. It is believed that offering food on the thirteenth day benefits the departed soul and improves its afterlife.

According to the Garud Puran, the death feast, Mrittu Bhoj should be offered only to the poor and Brahmins. While needy individuals can partake, if a wealthy person consumes it, it is considered a crime, as it is seen as depriving the poor of their rightful share.

What Does The Gita Say About Death Feast?

According to the Anushasan Parva of the Mahabharata, consuming a death feast has an adverse effect on a person. The energy of the one who partakes in it gets depleted. Once, Duryodhan invited Lord Krishna to a feast, but Lord Krishna said -

"Sampriti bhokyani, aapada bhokyani va punah" - This means that food should be eaten only when both the giver and the receiver are happy and content.
