  • NASA is launching Artemis I, the first leg of the Artemis Moon mission, on Monday, August 29, 2022. The launch window for Artemis I will remain open from 6:03 pm IST to 8:03 pm IST. Artemis I is an uncrewed flight that will provide a foundation for human deep space exploration, and is the first integrated test of NASA's deep space exploration systems. The Orion spacecraft, Space Launch System (SLS) rocket, and the ground systems at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida are the US space agency's deep space exploration systems. The uncrewed flight will take off from Launch Pad 39B at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
  • US Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Mike Gilday has said India can be a strategic partner to the United States by playing an important role in countering China. Gilday was speaking at a seminar hosted by the Heritage Foundation in Washington, reported Nikkei Asia. "India presents China with a two-front problem. They now force China to not only look east, toward the South China Sea and the Taiwan Strait, but they now have to be looking over their shoulder at India," he said.
  • The US Justice Department released a heavily redacted affidavit that underpinned the FBI's search of Trump's Florida residence on August 8, in which agents seized 11 sets of classified records that could gravely threaten national security if exposed.
  • The Taliban’s acting defence minister on Sunday said Pakistan had allowed American drones to use its airspace to access Afghanistan, a charge Pakistan has recently denied following a U.S. air strike in Kabul. Acting Minister of Defence Mullah Mohammad Yaqoob told reporters at a news conference in Kabul that American drones have been entering Afghanistan via Pakistan.

  • The Supreme Court on Monday sought response from the Uttar Pradesh government on the bail plea of Kerala-based journalist Siddique Kappan, arrested in October 2020 while on his way to Hathras where a Dalit woman had died after allegedly being gang-raped. A bench comprising Chief Justice Uday Umesh Lalit and S Ravindra Bhat fixed the plea for final disposal on September 9. The Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court had earlier this month rejected the bail application of Kappan, who was booked under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the alleged Hathras conspiracy case.
  • Ambani announced Jio 5G services on Monday. Within Diwali 2022, Jio 5G will be launched in the metro cities in India. "Using 5G, we can accelerate the roll-out of top quality, highly affordable fixed broadband services," Mukesh Ambani said, adding that "Jio 5G will be the world's most advanced 5G," he said, while adding, "Subsequently, we plan to increase the Jio 5G footprint month after month. By December 2023, which is less than 18 months from today, we will deliver Jio 5G to every town, every taluka, and every tehsil of our country."
  •  A 19-year-old girl, who was set on fire for turning down a man’s proposal, has succumbed to her injuries in Jharkhand’s Dumka. The district administration has imposed Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) which prohibits the gathering of four or more people in the concerned area, in a bid to maintain law and order amid widespread protests seeking justice for the deceased. The mortal remains of the teenager have been taken for last rites amid heavy security. BJP MP Sunil Soren is likely to attend the last rites.
  • Former Union minister and Congress veteran Ghulam Nabi Azad on Monday trained his guns against the party, from which he resigned last week  targeting Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi saying that they never wanted anyone to question them. Referring to the G23 letter that Azad and his colleagues had written to Congress interim president Sonia Gandhi suggesting reforms within the party, he said that “they had an issue” since that letter was written. Following his resignation from the party on Friday, the Congress slammed Azad linking his resignation to the end of his Rajya Sabha tenure. The party had also alleged that his DNA has been “Modi-fied”.

  • MTV VMAs returned with a bang! The biggest musical night of the year kicked off on Sunday evening in the Prudential Center in New Jersey with the biggest stars from the musical world in attendance. Taylor Swift won the top honour as she took home the Best long-form video for 'All Too Well (10 Minute Version) (Taylor’s Version)'. Harry Styles bagged the Moonman trophy in the Best Album category for his recent album 'Harry’s House'. Lizzo also took home the Moon Person for 'video for good' for 'About Damn Time.' BLACKPINK won their first VMA trophy in the Best metaverse performance category.
  • Music composer AR Rahman has been honoured by Canada as Markham city in the country has named a street after him.  The Academy Award-winning composer took to Twitter and shared a heartfelt note, thanking the officials for the honour. He thanked Mayor Frank Scarpitti and the people of Canada in his tweet.

  • Former India captain and AIFF presidential candidate Bhaichung Bhutia on Sunday alleged that political pressure has led to his home state body Sikkim FA not supporting him in the upcoming general body elections. The 45-year-old Bhutia, one of the biggest legends in Indian football, is set for a straight fight for the AIFF president's post in the September 2 polls. His opponent, former Mohun Bagan and East Bengal goalkeeper Kalyan Chaubey, is believed to be the front-runner with backing from politically important state associations like Gujarat and Arunachal Pradesh. Chaubey is a BJP leader in Bengal.
  • Former India skipper Virat Kohli hailed Team India's "special win" against arch-rivals Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 on Sunday. Hardik Pandya's all-round show helped India to defeat Pakistan by five wickets. Kohli, who was returning from a month-long break, also contributed with a well-made 35 off 34 balls.The star batter lauded the team's effort following the win over Pakistan.
