Vijay has on numerous occasions featured in Forbes India's Celebrity 100 list . He has also won several awards including an Osaka Best Actor Award and a South Indian International Movie Award.

Vijay started his film career as a child actor in Vetri (1984). He then went on to work in many commercial and critical successes.

Vijay is known for films like 'Ghilli', which was the first Tamil film of all time to gross over Rs. 500 million in the domestic box office.'Ghilli'was also reviewed well by critics upon it's release in 2003

'Azhagiya Tamil Magan' collected $1.043 million overseas, a top grosser at overseas box offices in 2007 in which Vijay played the role of the protagonist and the antagonist at the same time. The romantic thriller was also part of the top ten Asian films box office hit chart in Malaysia in 2007.

Vijay's 2012 film 'Nanban' rceeived a lot of critical acclaim and went on to have a 100-day thetarical run. It also reportedly grossed Rs. 150 cr at the box office. Another film by Vijay, 'Thuppakki' an action-thriller often called his best became the third Tamil film to enter the Rs. 1 billion club domestically. 'Thuppakki' is also one if the highest grossing films

Like 'Thuppakki', Vijay went on to 'Puli' in 2015, another box office breaker which was appreicated by foreign critics alot. Later 'Theri', another box office blockbuster became Vijay's second-highest-grossing film. However, Vijay's filmography is incomplete without 'Mersal' for which he was nominated for the Best Actor at the National Film Awards UK in 2018. 'Mersal' also won the Best film award ar the same event. Mersal, Vijay's 61st film collected some Rs. 2.5 billion on the global box office establishing him as one of the biggest successful superstars in Indian cinema.
