Uttarakhand: 'Cheap' Lehenga Sent By Groom's Family Leads To Bride Calling Off Wedding

The debate over the cost of the lehenga between bot the families turned ugly and the matter reached the Kotwali police

Indian weddings are often lavish with both the bride and groom's family spending huge amounts of money on decoration, food clothes, jewellery etc. But what happens when a lehenga (Wedding dress) given to the bride by the grooms family turns out to be "cheap"?

A girl from Haldwani in Uttarakhand refused to marry her fiancé because she did not get a costly lehenga.

When the girl came to know that the wedding attire brought by the groom's family for her cost "only" Rs 10,000, she objected to it and started to throw tantrums. However, the grooms family said that they purchased the lehenga exclusively from Lucknow, The New Indian Express reported, citing local media.

Despite the effort by senior police officer to end the argument and bring both the warring parties together, the two sides reached an agreement to call off the marriage, according to local reports.

After the bride objected to the quality and price of the lehenga, the groom's father even gave the girl his ATM card to purchase the lehenga of her choice but that too proved to be futile and the matter reached the police station, reported the local media.

The girl got engaged to the boy working in the medical profession from Ranikhet in June and the wedding was to take place on November 5, for which cards were also printed and distributed.
