Tripura Post-Poll Violence: Eight People Injured, Twenty Arrested So Far

Tripura police said they have arrested a total of twenty people in the states for their alleged role in post-poll violence incidents.

Around eight people were left injured in Tripura in post-poll violence incidents as per the state police on Saturday. So far, the officials have arrested at least twenty people for their alleged roles in the violent incidents that took place in the state after the election results were announced in which Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha was re-elected in office, news agency PTI reported.

On Friday, Saha visited the GBP hospital in Tripura to meet the injured people and directed the police authorities to take strict legal actions to bring the miscreants to justice. He said appropriate actions were needed to maintain peace and tranquillity.

A maximum number of cases pertaining to post-poll violence reportedly emerged from two districts Sepahijala and Khowai. Injured people from these districts were sent to a local hospital in the area.

According to Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG), Law and Order, Jyotishman Das Chowdhury, no death has been reported so far, PTI reported.

Chowdhury said, “So far five specific FIRs have been registered in this regard and eight people were grievously injured. Over twenty miscreants were arrested for their alleged involvement,” as cited by PTI.

He further added that around seventy incidents related to post-poll violence have emerged from across Tripura in the wake of the announcement of election results.

Chowdhury stated all the police stations have been put an alert mode with respect to the post-poll violence in the state. According to him, the police officials are working closely with the local administration in order to ensure peace in the affected regions.

Charilam, Sutarmura and Lalsinghmura are some of the areas in the Sepahijala district which reported some minor cases of violence. The police said major incidents were averted due to their timely actions on the matter.

The police department said, “Some elements are trying to disturb the peace in the state by spreading rumours of clash and attack. It is informed that so far no untoward incident has been reported. Police are actively patrolling in all sensitive areas."

The police have further asked people to not believe any such rumours. The authorities have also requested the citizens to report any such misleading information or post to the nearest police station.

Earlier on Friday, two BJP workers were seriously left injured when a group of unidentified miscreants assaulted them in West Tripura district’s Barjala region. Currently, they are admitted to the GBP hospital, said Superintendent of Police (SP), West, Sankar Roy.

He also informed that at least two people were arrested for their alleged connection with the attacks.

The BJP-IPFT alliance formed the state government for the second consecutive time with the saffron party getting 32 seats in a 60-member state assembly on Thursday.
