'Situation In State Dangerous': Sitaram Yechury-led CPI(M) Delegation Leaves For Manipur

Yechury said the situation in the state is dangerous and it is necessary to control it for the unity of the country.

A four-member delegation headed by the CPI (M) General Secretary, Sitaram Yechury, left for Manipur for a two-day visit. Speaking on the visit to the northeastern state, Sitaram Yechury said the situation in the state is dangerous and it is necessary to control it for the unity of the country. "We are going to express solidarity with the people of Manipur and tell them India is with you. The Manipur CM should be sacked. We will do whatever is necessary to restore peace. The situation in the state is dangerous, and it is necessary to control it for the unity of the country," Sitaram Yechury said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

Last month, a delegation of 20 MPs from the Opposition bloc went on a two-day visit to violence-hit Manipur. The delegation took stock of the ground situation and would make recommendations to the government and the Parliament for a solution. The delegation included Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, K Suresh and Gaurav Gogoi of the Congress, TMC's Sushmita Dev, JMM's Mahua Maji, DMK's Kanimozhi, NCP's Mohammad Faizal, Jayant Chaudhary of RLD, Manoj Kumar Jha of RJD, NK Premachandran of RSP, T Thirumavalavan of VCK, JD(U) chief Rajiv Ranjan (Lalan) Singh, Aneel Prasad Hegde of JD-U, CPI's Sandosh Kumar, CPI(M)'s AA Rahim, Samajwadi Party's Javed Ali Khan, IUML's E T Mohammed Basheer, AAP's Sushil Gupta, Arvind Sawant (Shiv Sena-Uddhav Thackeray), D Ravikumar (DMK), and Phulo Devi Netam of Congress.

The delegation met with people from both the Meiteis and Kuki communities, estranged in an ethnic clash in the state since May 3. More than 160 people have been killed and several hundred injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3 when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the majority Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe status.

Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.
