Manipur Viral Video: Cops Identify 14 More People, Initiate Action To Nab Them
Manipur police said that at least 14 people have been identified from a video of two women who were stripped and paraded and action has been initiated to arrest them.
Manipur police on Monday said that at least 14 people have been identified from a video of two women who were stripped and paraded and action has been initiated to arrest them, as reported by the news agency PTI. The police have already arrested six people pertaining to the viral video of the incident on May 4 in Kangpokpi district.
The two women are alleged to have been sexually assaulted before being set free by a mob. A 26-second video of the incident had surfaced on July 19.
One of the women seen in the video is the wife of an ex-Army man, who served as a subedar in the Assam Regiment and had even fought in the Kargil War, as reported by PTI. A complaint in connection with the video was lodged around a month ago – June 21 – at the Saikul police station in Kangpokpi district.
Meanwhile, earlier in the day, the Manipur Police registered an FIR against unidentified people for circulating a picture of an RSS functionary and his son and alleging that they were directly involved in parading two women naked on May 4. The picture was posted by some people on social media platforms, including Twitter and Facebook, as reported by the news agency PTI.
"Cyber Crime Police Station (CCPS) had received a report from a functionary of a political party that a picture of him and his son collaged with a screenshot of the viral video of two women paraded, along with a caption that they were directly involved in the crime, was uploaded in various social media platforms," the Manipur Police said in a tweet.
"A case is taken up at CCPS for spreading false news with intent to cause injury, damage to his reputation and create serious breach of law and order," the police said in another tweet. Police said that attempts were being made to identify and arrest the culprits.
More than 160 people have lost their lives, and several have been injured since ethnic violence broke out in the state on May 3, when a 'Tribal Solidarity March' was organised in the hill districts to protest against the Meitei community's demand for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status.
Meiteis account for about 53 per cent of Manipur's population and live mostly in the Imphal Valley, while tribals, which include Nagas and Kukis, constitute 40 per cent and reside mostly in the hill districts.
