Manipur: Four Held After Viral Video Sparks Outrage, Efforts Underway To Nab Other Culprits

Manipur Viral Video: Chief Minister N Biren Singh said investigation was underway and strict action would be taken against all the perpetrators.

New Delhi: Three more persons, in connection with the Manipur viral video case where two women were seen being paraded naked, were arrested on Thursday, news agency ANI reported. The main accused Khuyrum Heradas was arrested from Thoubal district earlier in the day.

The video, that went viral on the social media a day back, shows two women being paraded naked in Kangpokpi district in Manipur, which has been hit by ethnic violence since May 3.

Chief Minister N Biren Singh said strict action would be taken against all the perpetrators and the government was considering the possibility of capital punishment.

"My hearts go out to the two women who were subjected to a deeply disrespectful and inhumane act, as shown in the distressing video that surfaced yesterday. After taking suo-moto cognisance of the incident immediately after the video surfaced, the Manipur Police swung to action and made the first arrest this morning," Biren Singh tweeted.

"A thorough investigation is currently underway and we will ensure strict action is taken against all the perpetrators, including considering the possibility of capital punishment. Let it be known, there is absolutely no place for such heinous acts in our society," he added.

Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, speaking to the media ahead of the Parliament session vowed that the guilty would not be spared. He said, "The incident of Manipur has put 140 crore Indians to shame. I want to assure the people of India that the accused will not be spared."

He also requested all chief ministers to further strengthen law and order mechanism in their respective states, especially to protect women and to take most stringent action.
