Manipur: Security Forces Arrest 5 Maoist Militants For Extortion

Manipur has the highest number of insurgent groups, both hill- and valley-based, in the entire northeastern region.

Guwahati: Security forces in Manipur have arrested five active members of the Kangleipak Communist Party (KCP), a Maoist militant organisation, on charges of extorting huge amounts of money from the public and business establishments.

The security forces, while conducting search operations on the fringes and in the vulnerable areas of the violence-hit state’s Bishnupur, Kakching, Imphal West, and Imphal East districts, arrested the five military KCP task force members, the Manipur police said in a post on X.

The security forces also recovered a weapon, 48 live rounds of bullets, three 7.62mm ammunition charger clips, five mobile phone handsets, one pistol holster, three pairs of combat outfits, four pairs of jungle boots, one Bullet Proof (BP) jacket, some cash, and a hatchback car without a registration plate from their possession, the police said.

Manipur has the highest number of insurgent groups, both hill- and valley-based, in the entire northeastern region. The majority of the hill-based insurgent groups are under tripartite Suspension of Operations (SoO) with the government of India and the state government. However, several militant organisations are still active in the state with extortion being the main source of funding for these groups.

Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh earlier this month said that the government is engaged in negotiations with an insurgent group to bring them back to the mainstream. The Chief Minister however did not name the group saying it is too early to provide detailed information on the talks but said that there is steady progress.

Meanwhile, the Manipur police have detained as many as 2,425 persons over the past 24 hours in connection with violation of the law in different districts of the state. On the other hand, the state police have also erected a total of 133 checkpoints in different districts of the state to prevent miscreants from carrying out any subversive activities.
