Manipur Police Rescue Abducted Student, Arrest 8 Militants With Arms

The Manipur police rescued an abducted student after kidnappers allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 15 lakh from the family for his safe release.

Guwahati: The Manipur police on Saturday rescued an abducted student and arrested eight accused, who are allegedly active cadres of the Manipur-based insurgent outfit Kangleipak Communist Party-People’s War Group (KCP-PWG), during an operation carried out in the state’s Imphal West district. The kidnappers had allegedly demanded a ransom of Rs 15 lakh from the family of the abducted student for his safe release.

“On 09.12.2023, Manipur Police successfully rescued 1(one) abducted person and arrested the 8(eight) kidnappers who are active cadres of KCP(PWG) from Imphal West in connection with Kidnapping and Ransom case registered at Imphal PS,” the Manipur police said in a post on X.

The police also recovered three weapons, including a Ghatak rifle with magazine containing 10 live rounds of bullets, an AK-47 assault rifle with magazine containing six live rounds of bullets, a .32 pistol with magazine also containing six live rounds of bullets, 13 mobile phone handsets, one ‘Samurai’ sword (a Japanese sword), and two cars from the possession of the arrested persons.

According to Imphal West Superintendent of Police (SP) Ksh Shivakanta Singh, the Imphal police station received a complaint at around 1 am on Saturday that a 22-year-old student of the DM College of Science in Imphal West district had been kidnapped at around 1.30 pm on Friday.

“Soon after receiving the complaint, all teams of Imphal West district police immediately swung into action and carried out operations at different locations. During one of the operations carried out at the Yumnam Huidrom Makha Leikai area under the jurisdiction of the Wangoi police station in Imphal West district, the police rescued the abducted student from a house. The police also arrested eight kidnappers from two vehicles in the area,” SP Shivakanta Singh told the media.  

The arrested accused are identified as Khwairakpam Rajen Singh (24), Sukham James Singh (23), Moiranghem Amarjit Singh (25), Taorem Rohit Singh (23), Kakyenpaibam Hemjit Singh (21), Sandam Romen Singh (36), Khagembam Dayananda Singh (23),nort and Sarungbam Umananda (34).
