PM Modi, HM Shah Assure Central Support Amid Flooding In Northeast, Rs 2 Lakh Ex Gratia Announced

Northeast floods: PM Narendra Modi expressed concern over the flood situation in northeastern states, triggered by Cyclone Remal. He assured all possible support to the affected states.

Northeast floods: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday expressed his concern over the flood situation in the northeastern states of India. Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram have been hit by heavy rains followed by floods. Triggered by Cyclone Remal, the natural calamity in the northeastern states has affected lakhs of people.

Prime Minister took to his official X (formerly Twitter) handle to extend his thoughts and prayers to the affected states. "Unfortunately, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal have witnessed natural disasters in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal. My thoughts and prayers are with all those who have been affected there,” he wrote in the post. 

Assuring any possible support to the affected states, he wrote, “Took stock of the prevailing situation. The Central Government has assured all possible support to the states and is continuously monitoring the situation. Officials are working on the ground to assist those affected.”

He also announced an ex gratia of Rs. 2 lakh from PMNRF for the next of kin of each deceased due to the natural disasters in the aftermath of Cyclone Remal in Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Tripura, and West Bengal. "The injured would be given Rs. 50,000 each," he announced.

Before the Prime Minister’s social media post about the situation, Home Minister Amit Shah also assured of possible assistance to the affected. On X, Shah wrote, “Deeply concerned about the natural disasters triggered by Cyclone Remal in Assam, Tripura, Manipur, Meghalaya, and Mizoram.” 

He had also informed through the post that the PM had been briefed by him on the situation. 

“Spoke to the respective state Chief Ministers, took stock of the situation, and assured them of all possible help. Our thoughts are with those who have lost their loved ones and prayers with those injured for a speedy recovery. The situation is being closely monitored and authorities are providing all possible assistance to the affected,” the Union Home Minister added.

Flood Situation In Assam, Manipur

The flood situation in in nine districts of Assam has already claimed six lives, since May 28, informed the Central Water Commission to PTI. The natural disaster has affected over two lakh people in the state.

Apart from that, six rivers in Assam and Manipur, including Brahmaputra, and Barak, are experiencing severe flooding. The Brahmaputra River in Jorhat district, Assam, is flowing 0.29 meters above its danger level, while the Barak River in Imphal East district poses a severe threat to its surrounding areas.
