DCW Chief Reaches Manipur, Assam CM Says State Was 'Blockade Capital' Under Manmohan Singh — Top Points

Manipur is on the boil after a video showing two tribal women from a particular community being paraded naked went viral.

New Delhi: The Delhi Commission for Women (DCW) chairperson Swati Maliwal on Sunday landed in Imphal to interact with sexual abuse survivors, a day after the state government asked her to postpone her visit to Manipur.

Manipur is on the boil after a video showing two tribal women from a particular community being paraded naked went viral.

While speaking to ANI, Maliwal said, "I will directly go to the CM's Office. I want to meet chief minister, N Biren Singh. I want to meet the sexual abuse survivors and see if they have got legal aid, counselling or any compensation."

Meanwhile, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has alleged that the ethnic conflicts in Manipur have "genesis in faulty politics" of previous Congress governments in the state.

Here are the recent updates:

  • Upon reaching the airport, Swati Maliwal appealed to the state government saying that she has reached there to help the people of Manipur. "Please allow me to do that. I have not come here to do politics. I request PM Modi and the Women and Child Development Minister (Smriti Irani) to visit Manipur. I will also try and meet the Governor," Maliwal said.

  • Speaking to reporters, Tamil Nadu BJP chief K Annamalai said, "We all know that Manipur has been a very complex state, even before BJP came to power. The video that we have seen is extremely shameful and it has got no place in the democratic society. Action has been taken against this, and six people have also been arrested. When we look at the same incidents in West Bengal and Rajasthan, why are the political parties not talking about that?"

  • Reacting to the Manipur viral video incident, Union Minister Anurag Thakur told reporters, "Atrocities against women in any state is heart-wrenching. It is the state's responsibility to take charge & reduce crime against women...I would request the opposition not to run away from discussions...The opposition should not politicise such sensitive issues."

  • "The pain arising from multi-ethnic conflicts in Manipur has its genesis in faulty policies of Congress governments during formative years of the state. Repairing fault lines created by 7 decades of misgovernance will take time," Assam CM wrote in a series of tweets on Saturday.
