Fact Check: Viral Claim That Jimmy Kimmel Show Is Ending In Jan 2025 Is False And Stems From Satire

The claim that Jimmy Kimmel's show will end on Trump's inauguration day is false. It originated from a satirical article, and ABC has not announced any plans to cancel the show.

The Verdict [False]

The claim stems from a satirical article published in November.

The claim

A satirical website first published the claim that American comedian Jimmy Kimmel's show is to end permanently on January 20, 2025 — the day of Donald Trump's inauguration as president. It gained traction online, with some misconstruing it as a real announcement.

One account posted a graphic on Facebook (archived here) on November 26, with side-by-side photographs of Kimmel and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, with the caption, "Jimmy Kimmel Show Will End Permanently on January 20, Host Strongly Affirms 'I'm Leaving Canada and Never Returning to the US, I Hate Elon."

The post gathered more than 1,600 likes, with one user saying in the comments, "It's funny how they're showing the world how entitled they are, because they can move wherever, and whenever, they want. They just don't realize that." Another added, "bye bye, good riddance."

The claim also appeared on a post on TikTok (archived here), which was detected using Logically Accelerate, a product that enables the discovery of fact-check-worthy content on social media.

The posts surfaced after Trump won November's U.S. presidential election, with Musk later being appointed as co-leader of an initiative to boost government efficiency. Kimmel has been a vocal Trump critic and reacted to the election results on his show, calling it a "terrible night."

In fact

ABC, the channel that broadcasts the late-night show, has not issued a statement about ending the show on its website or via social media as of the time of writing. Kimmel has also not made any such announcement through his social media accounts.

In response to a Logically Facts request for comment, a spokesperson for the show said that the claim is "not accurate."

The earliest iteration Logically Facts found of the claim stems from a November 10 article published by SpaceXMania (archived here). The website describes itself as "your go-to source for the latest Parody news and hilarious satirical commentary."

The claim was also published (archived here) that same day by an affiliate site, Esspots, which carries a disclaimer saying that the website "specializes in satire, parody, and humor."

The verdict

ABC did not announce that the Jimmy Kimmel Live show would permanently end on January 20, 2025, the same day as Trump's inauguration. The claim stems from a satire site.
