Trump Announces Israel-Iran Ceasefire Amid Escalating Tensions

Trump announces a ceasefire between Israel and Iran after Iran's strike on U.S. bases in Iraq, ending 12 days of conflict. Qatar played key role in brokering Tehran's agreement.

US President Donald Trump announced that a "complete and total" ceasefire had been reached between Israel and Iran, aiming to bring an end to the 12-day-long conflict, shortly after both countries had issued fresh threats.

An Iranian official confirmed Tehran had consented to the truce, though there was no immediate statement from Israel.

According to a senior White House source, Israel agreed to the ceasefire on the condition that Iran halts further attacks. The agreement was mediated by Trump during a phone conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Trump implied that the parties would be given time to finish their ongoing operations, after which the ceasefire would take effect gradually.

“If all proceeds as planned—and it will—I want to commend both Israel and Iran for their strength, wisdom, and determination in ending what can now be known as ‘THE 12 DAY WAR,’” Trump posted on Truth Social.

Trump's Ceasefire Announcement

Trump Announced it through his official Truth Social handle and wrote, "CONGRATULATIONS TO EVERYONE! It has been fully agreed by and between Israel and Iran that there will be a Complete and Total CEASEFIRE (in approximately 6 hours from now, when Israel and Iran have wound down and completed their in progress, final missions!), for 12 hours, at which point the War will be considered, ENDED! Officially, Iran will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 12th Hour, Israel will start the CEASEFIRE and, upon the 24th Hour, an Official END to THE 12 DAY WAR will be saluted by the World. During each CEASEFIRE, the other side will remain PEACEFUL and RESPECTFUL. On the assumption that everything works as it should, which it will, I would like to congratulate both Countries, Israel and Iran, on having the Stamina, Courage, and Intelligence to end, what should be called, “THE 12 DAY WAR.” This is a War that could have gone on for years, and destroyed the entire Middle East, but it didn’t, and never will! God bless Israel, God bless Iran, God bless the Middle East, God bless the United States of America, and GOD BLESS THE WORLD!"

Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani, helped secure Iran’s agreement during a call with Iranian leaders, a source familiar with the talks told Reuters.

The Qatari Emir was informed by Trump that Israel had also agreed to the truce, the same source said. Neither Iran’s delegation to the U.N. nor the Israeli embassy in Washington responded immediately to Reuters’ requests for comment.

Just hours earlier, three Israeli officials indicated that their military campaign in Iran was nearing its end and this message had been relayed to the U.S.

Channel 12 News reported that Netanyahu instructed his ministers—who concluded talks early Tuesday—not to speak to the press.

U.S. stock markets showed optimism, with S&P 500 futures climbing 0.4% late Monday, pointing to gains on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, U.S. crude oil prices dropped in early Tuesday Asian trading to their lowest in over a week, reflecting eased fears of regional supply disruptions following the ceasefire news.

Is Peace Really Near?

Despite the ceasefire talks, the situation on the ground remained tense. Israel issued two evacuation alerts within a span of two hours for neighborhoods in Tehran, once late Monday and again early Tuesday.

Israel’s Army Radio also reported that air raid sirens were triggered in the southern Golan Heights over concerns of enemy aircraft. Earlier Monday, Trump said he would urge Israel to pursue peace, downplaying Iran’s missile strike on a U.S. air base that caused no injuries and thanking Tehran for its prior warning.

Iran’s attack was a response to U.S. B-2 bombers dropping 30,000-pound bunker-busting bombs on Iranian nuclear sites over the weekend, joining Israel’s air offensive during this 12-day conflict. Most of Tehran’s population—around 10 million people—has fled due to the bombing campaign.

While Washington insists its strikes targeted only Iran’s nuclear facilities and did not intend to spark a broader war, Trump posted Sunday that the goal could also include removing Iran’s clerical leadership, in power since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

Israel, on the other hand, made it clear that their attacks on sites like Evin prison and other strategic locations in Tehran aimed to cripple Iran’s ruling establishment and its grip on power.
