Russia Reacts To Donald Trump's Win, Says 'No Plans For Putin To Congratulate Him'

Russia also said that it was open to dialogue with the United States despite the relations between the two nations being at an all time low after the Russia-Ukraine war.

Russia on Wednesday said that new opportunities to "reset relations" between Moscow and Washinton have opened up after Donald Trump had declared victory in the US presidential election. Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that President Vladimir Putin had no plans to congratulate Trump.

Earlier today, Russia said that it was open to dialogue with the US despite the relations between the two nations being at an all time low, adding that Moscow would see what happens if Trump returns to the White House in January, news agency Reuters reported.

Shortly after, Donald Trump made a comeback to the White House with a historic win, reclaiming the swing states he had lost to Joe Biden in the 2020 elections.

Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, a massive confrontation was triggered between Moscow and the West, which is the first since the 1962 Cuban missile crisis when the Soviet Union and the US came close to nuclear war.

Russia's sovereign wealth fund CEO Kirill Dmitriev, who is also a senior figure in Russia's political elite, said that Trump's team had won the presidency and the Senate  "despite a large-scale disinformation campaign directed against them".

"Their convincing victory shows that ordinary Americans are tired of the unprecedented lies, incompetence, and malice of the Biden administration," Dmitriev, who has had contacts with the Trump team in the past stated.

He further added that this "opens up new opportunities for resetting relations between Russia and the United States".

Republican Trump had claimed victory in the 2024 presidential contest after media reports projected that he had defeated Democrat and incubment Vice President Kamala Harris, making a historic political comeback after four years following his defeat in the 2020 elections.

Kremlin 'Unaware' If Putin Would Congratulate Trump

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated that he was not aware if President Vladimir Putin would congratulate Trump after the latter declared he had won the US election, Reuters reported.

Referring to US support for Ukraine, he said: "Let's not forget that we are talking about an unfriendly country that is directly and indirectly involved in a war against our state".

Peskov also said that Russia will "draw conclusions based on concrete steps and concrete words,"  AFP reported.

On being asked if the relations between Russia and US would decline further if Putin did not congratulate Trump, Peskov said: "It is almost impossible to worsen them further, relations are at their historically lowest point. What happens next will depend on the next U.S. leadership."

"President Putin has repeatedly said that he is open to constructive dialogue based on fairness and equality, and a willingness to take each other's concerns into account...At the moment, the U.S. administration is diametrically opposed, and what will happen in January - we will see," Reuters quoted Peskov as saying.
