Pulwama attack: China again declines India's bid to list JeM chief Masood Azhar as 'global terrorist' by UN

China has so far maintained silence on the deadly attack on Indian soldiers and are yet to condemn the attacks as well.

New Delhi: As the world comes out in support and expresses solidarity to the families of the martyrs who lost their lives in deadly terrorist attack in Pulwama on CRPF convoy, and condemns Pakistan for their horrendous act; China has once again declined to back India’s appeal to list the mastermind of the attack JeM Chief Masood Azhar as global terrorist. The appeal was made by United Nations following the Pulwama attack. This has come after repeated requests from India over the same. China has so far maintained silence on the deadly attack on Indian soldiers and are yet to condemn the attacks as well. This comes after China and India recently locked horns on Dokalam issue, a 72 days military standoff was the result of the accretion of mistrust between the two countries. PM Modi and Chinese President XI emphasized the need for greater cooperation and encourage CBMs to this reason because it’s conducive for development of the people and as well as the region. In Wuhan informal summit both leaders agreed to undertake joint economic and developmental projects in war-torn Afghanistan which is in the backyard of china and India. Foreign secretary Vijay Gokhale who is considering being the architect of Sino – Indian rapprochement commented during the press briefing that the issue of Masood Azhar who is the chief of Jaish- e-Mohammed also rose with President XI because China has repeatedly blocked India’s bid to designate Masood Azhar as global terrorist in the UN. Delhi’s attempts to list him at the UNSC have been repeatedly blocked by China. The most recent effort began after India blamed Jaish for the attack on the Indian Air Force base in Pathankot on January 2, 2016. India put forward a proposal in February 2016 to designate Azhar as a terrorist under the aegis of the UNSC 1267 committee. China intervened at Pakistan’s behest and placed a technical hold on India’s move in March 2016, and again in October 2016. It subsequently used its veto power to block the proposal in December 2016, a day before the technical hold ended.
