PM Modi Speaks With Iranian President, Urges De-Escalation: 'India On Side Of Peace, Humanity'
Amidst rising Middle East tensions, PM Modi spoke with Iranian President Pezeshkian, expressing deep concern over recent escalations.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a crucial phone conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday, stressing the importance of immediate de-escalation and the pursuit of dialogue in light of the worsening tensions between Iran and Israel. The call came just hours after the United States launched a series of airstrikes targeting major nuclear sites in Iran, intensifying concerns over a broader regional conflict.
According to a statement from the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), the call was initiated by President Pezeshkian, who shared his perspective on the ongoing conflict and briefed Prime Minister Modi on the latest developments in the region.
Prime Minister Modi conveyed India’s “deep concern” over the escalating tensions and underscored the urgent need for restraint and peaceful negotiations. In a post shared on social media, he said, “We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability.”

The Ministry of External Affairs informed that the call came from Iranian President Pezeshkian in the wake of the United States' attack on the Iranian nuclear facilities.
"President Pezeshkian briefed PM in detail and shared his perspective on the current situation in the region, especially the ongoing conflict between Iran and Israel. PM expressed India’s deep concern at the recent escalations. PM conveyed that India was on the side of peace and humanity. In this context, PM emphasised the need for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward. He reiterated India’s support for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability," the MEA stated.
The PMO stated that Modi emphasised India’s position as a supporter of peace and humanity, urging for calm in the face of growing instability. He also expressed gratitude for Iran’s continued cooperation in facilitating the safe return and repatriation of Indian nationals.
US Strikes Trigger Global Concern
The conversation between the two leaders occurred shortly after US B-2 bombers reportedly targeted Iran’s nuclear sites in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan with bunker-buster munitions. US President Donald Trump declared that the facilities had been “completely and totally obliterated,” and issued a stern warning of further attacks if Iran fails to agree to peace.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi reacted sharply, condemning the US action as a blatant violation of the UN Charter, international law, and the nuclear non-proliferation treaty. “The events this morning are outrageous and will have everlasting consequences. Each and every member of the UN must be alarmed over this extremely dangerous, lawless and criminal behaviour,” he said, adding that Iran reserves “all options to defend its sovereignty.” Araghchi also announced that he would travel to Moscow for consultations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Global Powers Denounce US Strikes On Iran
The strikes have drawn condemnation from key global powers. Russia described the attack as “irresponsible” and accused the US of breaching international law, the UN Charter, and UN Security Council resolutions. China also denounced the bombings, stating they had “seriously violated the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law,” and had “exacerbated tensions in the Middle East.” Beijing called for an immediate ceasefire, particularly urging Israel to ensure civilian safety and return to the negotiating table.
European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas echoed similar concerns, appealing for restraint. “I urge all sides to step back, return to the negotiating table and prevent further escalation,” she said. The EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the evolving situation on Monday.
The United Kingdom and several other countries have also issued appeals for calm and a renewed commitment to diplomacy.
