PM Modi Arrives In US, Sullivan Confirms His Talks With Prez Biden On Russia-Ukraine War, China's Actions

PM Modi will participate in the Quad Leaders' Summit hosted by President Joe Biden in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

PM Modi In US: Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Philadelphia on Saturday, September 21 for his three-day visit to the United States. PM Modi will participate in the Quad Leaders' Summit hosted by President Joe Biden in his hometown of Wilmington, Delaware.

He will also address the 'Summit of the Future' at the UN General Assembly in New York and hold a roundtable with CEOs of top American firms working in the technology sector.

He landed at the Philadelphia International Airport today and will be going to Delware at Biden's residence for the Quad Leaders' Summit from here. In his departure statement PM Modi said: "I look forward to joining my colleagues President Biden, Prime Minister Albanese and Prime Minister Kishida for the Quad Summit".

As PM Modi landed at the airport, he received a rousing welcome from the members of the Indian diaspora who had gathered there to meet him. He was seen waving at them, shaking hands, and signing autographs, as they clicked pictures and cheered for him.

On PM Modi's meeting with the US President, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan revealed that Joe Biden will speak to him about the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict and the need for India to step up and support sovereignty and territorial integrity.

"I won't go too deep into the details of what he will say on those issues which are obviously sensitive and will obviously be critical priorities in the bilateral meeting. I will just say that the United States has been clear about our view that Russia's brutal war of aggression against Ukraine flouted every norm and principle of international law, that countries like India, India should step up and support the principles of sovereignty and territorial integrity, and that every country everywhere should refrain from supplying inputs to Russia's war machine for it to be able to continue to prosecute this brutal war. So they will talk about that," he said, as quoted by news agency ANI.

'Looking Forward To Welcoming Friends Of Our Nation': Biden

Ahead of the Quad Summit, US President Joe Biden welcomed the leaders and wrote on X (formerly Twitter), "Today, I'll welcome Prime Ministers Albanese, Modi, and Kishida to my home: Delaware. These leaders aren't just essential to ensuring a free and open Indo-Pacific – they're friends of mine and friends of our nation. I look forward to all we'll accomplish in the Summit ahead."

PM Modi & Biden To Exchange Views On China's Actions

Sullivan added that Biden will also wants to listen about PM Modi's historic visit to Ukraine and discuss a way forward to help the two warring nations reach a peaceful resolution. The US NSA revealed that the leaders will also share their views on China's actions with respect to not just the security domain but technology and economic as well.

"The President will also hear from Prime Minister Modi about his trip to Ukraine, which was an important and indeed historic trip, and it will be the opportunity for the two of them to talk about their respective views on the way forward. And then with respect to China, you know, they will talk about how they see China's actions in the region where China is headed. And that's not just true in the security domain, but in the economic and technology domain as well. And work to try to coordinate approaches to the extent that makes sense for both..."

After attending the Quad Summit, PM Modi will travel to New York to attend an Indian Community event at Long Island on September 22. On Monday, he will address the SOTF at the UN General Assembly.

'Quad's Purpose Is Not To Come Together Around China'

Responding to whether China views Quad being focused solely on it, Jake Sullivan further said the purpose of the Summit is not to come around China or any other particular country but to discuss the signficant development in the Indo-Pacific region.

"The leaders are going to talk about all of the significant developments and dynamics in the Indo-Pacific. But my point is that the purpose of the QUAD is not to come together around China or any other country. It's to come together around how to construct a free and open Indo-Pacific and actions and policies that disrupt or undermine that are certainly not just of interest but are going to be a matter of discussion for QUAD members. These issues are on the agenda because they relate to a free and Open Indo-Pacific," he said.

The US NSA further stressed that China is not the focus of the QUAD and that is not about one country. "It is about a larger vision that we're all trying to work," he added.
