'Dispatched Two Officers To Counsel Students': KP Oli After Nepalese Student's Suicide Sparks Protest In Odisha

The reaction from the Nepal PM KP Sharma Oli comes after the third-year B-Tech student, identified as Prakriti Lamsal, allegedly by suicide in her hostel leading to tension in the campus.

Nepal Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli took note of the death of an engineering student from the country who allegedly died by suicide in a private college in Odisha.

KP Oli took to social media platform to inform that the Nepali Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers to counsel Nepali students affected in the state. He also said that arrangements have been made to ensure that the students have the option to either remain in their hostel or return home, based on their preference.

"Our Embassy in New Delhi has dispatched two officers to counsel Nepali students affected in Odisha. Additionally, arrangements have been made to ensure they have the option to either remain in their hostel or return home, based on their preference," Oli said in a post on X.

The reaction from the Nepal Prime Minister comes after the third-year B-Tech student, identified as Prakriti Lamsal, allegedly by suicide in her hostel leading to tension in the campus.

Nepal Embassy in India said, "H.E. @DrShankarSharma had a telephone conversation with Prof. Achyuta Samanta, Founder of KIIT and also met his representatives. Prof. Samanta briefed Dr Sharma about the actions taken by KIIT including a public apology letter from the VC and termination of few staff."

Lamsal, a Nepali national, was a student of Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) in Bhubaneswar. The deceased's cousin had lodged a complaint at Infocity police station in Odisha capital alleging that his sister hanged herself in her hostel room on Sunday.

The KIIT said that the incident was immediately reported to the police. Bhubaneswar DCP Pinak Mishra said, "We have registered a case at Infocity Police Station based on the allegation that a male student abated her suicide. The accused student is in police custody and subjected to interrogation. The police have seized the mobile phone, laptop and other gadgets of the deceased woman. We are undertaking a scientific investigation into the matter."

Meanwhile, many students from Nepal assembled on the KIIT campus on Sunday night and staged demonstration demanding justice.
