Cyclone 'Tej' Becomes Extremely Severe, To Make Landfall At Yemen-Oman Coasts On Oct 24

Cyclone 'Tej' is on a trajectory toward the coasts of Yemen and Oman and is projected to continue its northwestward journey, culminating in a landfall between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman).

Cyclone 'Tej', gathering strength in the Arabian Sea, on Sunday intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm, and according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), it is on a trajectory toward the coasts of Yemen and Oman. This cyclonic storm is projected to continue its northwestward journey, culminating in a landfall between Al Ghaidah (Yemen) and Salalah (Oman), near the east of Al Ghaidah around midday on October 24. At that point, it is expected to maintain the classification of a very severe cyclonic storm, wielding wind speeds ranging from 115 to 125 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 140 kmph.

In its latest statement, the IMD disclosed, "The very severe cyclonic storm 'Tej' intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm and lay centred about 160 km east-southeast of Socotra (Yemen), 540 km south-southeast of Salalah (Oman), and 550 km southeast of Al Ghaidah (Yemen) at 8:30 am on Sunday."

Simultaneously, the IMD has issued updates on the depression over the west-central Bay of Bengal, which is anticipated to elevate into a deep depression by early Monday morning.

Following this, it is projected to undergo a reorientation and shift its course north-northeastwards over the following three days, directing it towards the coasts of Bangladesh and adjacent West Bengal, according to the meteorological authority.

Moreover, the depression residing over the Bay of Bengal is expected to metamorphose into a low-intensity cyclonic storm by October 24, a prediction that the India Meteorological Department disclosed on Sunday. The centre of this depression is currently located about 610 km south of Paradip, Odisha.

Over the subsequent 24 hours, this system is predicted to undergo further intensification as it advances northwestward, eventually steering its course towards the coasts of Bangladesh and West Bengal over the ensuing three days.

While the likelihood of a cyclonic storm formation looms, it is expected to be relatively feeble. Nevertheless, it may impart a marginal influence on Odisha, delivering light to moderate rainfall. Weather scientist Umashankar Dash of the Regional Meteorological Centre has urged caution among fishermen, warning them against venturing into the sea until October 25 due to expected adverse conditions, news agency PTI reported. The IMD has also alerted farmers in coastal Odisha to expedite the harvesting of matured paddy crops by October 23, as certain regions might encounter light to moderate rainfall during this period.

Under the system's influence, the IMD anticipates light to moderate rainfall at select locations in coastal Odisha on October 23, and an expansion of these conditions to many places on October 24-25.
