Mafia-Turned-Politician Atiq Ahmed & His Brother Shot Dead By 3 Miscreants
Mafia-turned-politician Atiq Ahmed and his brother Ashraf Ahmed were shot dead while being taken for a medical test in Prayagraj. The shooting occurred inside Prayagraj's Dhoomanganj police station. Atiq and Ashraf were shot even as they spoke to the media while being escorted by policemen on duty. Multiple rounds of shots were fired from very close range.
Earlier, Atiq Ahmed's son Asad and his aide Ghulam, son of Maksudan, wanted by the police for their alleged involvement in the murder of Umesh Pal murder case in Prayagraj, have been killed in an encounter. Both were killed during a police operation in Jhansi. More information about the incident is still being gathered.
Ex-K'taka Dy CM Savadi To Contest Polls On Congress Ticket After Quitting BJP
After being unhappy with the BJP for denying him a ticket in the upcoming Karnataka Assembly Elections, former Karnataka Deputy CM Laxman Savadi who had quit the saffron party will now contest the polls on a Congress ticket from the Athani constituency. This after he met State Congress president DK Shivakumar and former chief minister Siddaramaiah in Bengaluru. Sources said Savadi was in touch with the Congress and the Janata Dal (Secular) and weighing his options after he quit the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party. Laxman Savadi resigned as a Legislative Council member and from the primary membership of the BJP on April 12 after he was denied a ticket.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal To Be Questioned By CBI On April 16 In Liquor Policy Case
The CBI will question Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in connection with the now-withdrawn liquor policy case on April 16. Kejriwal has been summoned by the CBI at 11 am on Sunday at the agency's headquarters in Delhi. BJP leader Kapil Mishra said Kejriwal was summoned by the CBI after those accused in the liquor 'scam' confessed to giving money after talking to the AAP leader on Facetime. AAP leader and former Delhi deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has already been arrested by the CBI in the case. Sisodia has also been arrested by the Enforcement Directorate in a money laundering related to the alleged excise scam.

Japan PM Kishida Unhurt After Explosion During Speech, Suspect Arrested
Japan PM Kishida was evacuated as an explosion was heard during his speech in Wakayama city "after an apparent smoke or pipe bomb was thrown at the leader," the Japan Times reported. "Kishida left the scene unhurt after the incident, which took place as he was speaking with a candidate of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party," the report said. Police have reportedly arrested a 24-year-old male suspect from Kawanishi city. PM Modi also tweeted expressing concern over the incident and said he was relieved that Kishida was safe.

Taiwan’s Defence Ministry on Tuesday said that it has detected 9 Chinese warships and 26 aircraft around the island, a day after Beijing declared an end to its war games. China "organised military aircraft this morning and crossed the median line from the north, the centre, and the south," said Taiwan’s Defence Ministry, reported news agency AFP. Beijing had launched three days of military exercises around self-ruled Taiwan on Saturday that saw it simulate targeted strikes and practise a blockade of the island.

Russia's most prominent opposition politician and President Vladimir Putin’s critic, Alexei Navalny, is suffering from severe stomach pain inside the jail that could be an act of slow poisoning, news agency Reuters quoted his spokesperson as saying. "He doesn’t eat anything because he is prohibited from receiving parcels with food or buying food in the prison store and the food that is provided by the prison to him actually worsens his stomach pain," his spokesperson Kira Yarmysh said. According to the report, an ambulance was called for Navalny to the maximum security IK-6 penal colony at Melekhovo, where he is currently lodged.

The Constitution Bench headed by Justice KM Joseph has taken note of Attorney General R Venkatramani's statement that a pending bill is ready for consideration. The bench, which also comprises justices Ajay Rastogi, Aniruddha Bose, Hrishikesh Roy, and C T Ravikumar, directed that the matter be placed before Chief Justice DY Chandrachud to constitute a new bench as Justice Joseph is set to retire on June 16.

Ancient humans from the Bronze Age used hallucinogenic drugs derived from plants, an analysis of 3000-year-old hair strands from a burial site in Menorca, Spain has revealed. The study marks the first direct evidence of ancient drug use in Europe. Hallucinogenic drugs may have been used in ancient Europe as part of ritualistic ceremonies. The authors performed chemical analyses of a sample of human hair strands, and detected the alkaloids ephedrine, atropine, and scopolamine. The findings indicate that the drugs were consumed before death, and may have been reserved for a small group of people, who played a role similar to that of shamans. Shamans are individuals capable of mediating between a community and the supernatural world.
Technique Identifying Protein Build-Up Linked To Parkinson's Can Aid In Early Detection, Improve Treatment: Study In Lancet
A technique capable of identifying abnormal protein build-up linked to Parkinson's disease could allow early detection of the brain disorder and help in improved diagnosis and treatment, according to a study published April 13 in The Lancet Neurology journal. The technique is known as α-synuclein seed and amplification assay (αSyn-SAA). A protein called α-synuclein is linked neuropathologically and genetically to Parkinson's disease. The pathological hallmark of Parkinson's disease is the presence of misfolded α-synuclein protein aggregates in the brain. According to the study, the technique can accurately detect people with Parkinson's disease and identify individuals who are at risk of developing the neurodegenerative disease, and also those with early, non-motor symptoms prior to diagnosis.
