One More Person Tests Positive For Zika In Kerala; Experts Say Not A Reason To Worry

Speculation rife about the Zika to be dangerous in Kerala, the health expert urges people not to create scare

Thiruvananthapuram: The Zika virus caseload in Kerala has increased to 15 as one more person tested positive for the mosquito-borne disease. This happens while Kerala is still reeling under coronavirus' stomp. On Saturday, Kerala alone accounted for nearly 35 per cent of India's overall cases in the last 24 hours. A person is infected with the Zika virus when Aedes species of mosquito bites him/her indoors in the day time.

On Sunday, Kerala Health Minister Veena George confirmed that one more person tested positive for the Zika virus as the number of cases go up to 15 in the state.

Amid speculations that Kerala is going through severe health crisis as the health experts under pump due to the spike in Covid caseload on a daily basis as well as the outbreak of the Zika virus, the state's health expert Dr Mathew Varghese urges people not a create a scare while asserting that unlike Covid-19, Zika doesn't transmits though contact or droplets.

"Zika virus doesn't spread by contact or aerosols. It is spread by mosquitos and a different epidemiology. Right now, it shouldn't be the reason for worry. Epidemiologists and Kerala Public Health Department have to be concerned. We should not create a scare," Dr Varghese said as quotes by news portal Livemint.
