Rakesh Pal, the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), breathed his last in Chennai on Sunday after suffering a cardiac arrest at the age of 58. Rakesh Pal experienced uneasiness and was rushed to Rajeev Gandhi Government Hospital, where he received treatment. Despite efforts, he could not be saved.

  • Distinguished Career in Indian Coast Guard: Rakesh Pal was the 25th Director General of the Indian Coast Guard (ICG), a position he held from July 2023 until his untimely death. He was an esteemed leader, overseeing significant advancements in maritime security during his tenure.
  • Longstanding Service: Pal joined the Indian Coast Guard in January 1989, marking the beginning of a distinguished career that spanned over 34 years. He held several pivotal roles, contributing to the growth and effectiveness of the ICG.
  • Professional Specialisation: He underwent advanced training in gunnery and weapons systems at the Indian Naval School Dronacharya, Kochi, and completed an Electro-Optics Fire Control Solution course in the United Kingdom. His expertise in these areas earned him recognition as the First Gunner of the ICG.
  • Key Commands: Throughout his career, Pal commanded various ICG ships, including ICGS Samarth, ICGS Vijit, ICGS Sucheta Kriplani, ICGS Ahalyabai, and ICGS C-03. He also led two important Coast Guard bases in Gujarat—Okha and Vadinar.
  • Prominent Positions: In addition to his command roles, Pal held several senior positions ashore, including Commander Coast Guard Region (North West) in Gandhinagar, Deputy Director General (Policy & Plans), and Additional Director General Coast Guard at the ICG Headquarters in New Delhi.
