London School of Economics Alumna To Kejriwal Challenger In Delhi Polls: Who is Nupur Sharma?

The fall from grace for Nupur Sharma was as quick as she made a place for herself in the party after being chosen to contest against AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal in 2015.

From being one of the top spokespersons of the BJP and a popular figure in TV debates, Nupur Sharma is in the eye of a storm over her controversial remarks against Prophet Mohammad. Amid severe criticism from Islamic countries of West Asia, the ruling BJP, in a damage control mode, suspended Sharma last week.

The fall from grace for Nupur Sharma was as quick as she made a place for herself in the party after being chosen to contest against AAP supremo Arvind Kejriwal in the 2015 Delhi assembly election.

According to her LinkedIn profile, Nupur Sharma mentions she is an advocate by profession. The 37-year-old comes from a family of civil servants and businessmen.

Sharma, who hails from Delhi, completed her graduation from Hindu College and thereafter studied law at the Faculty of Law in Delhi University. She then pursued further studies in law from the London School of Economics. She started working for a private law firm, but quit to pursue politics full time.

Her first brush with politics took place when she was elected the president of the Delhi University Students Union in 2008. She was then a student leader with RSS-affiliated ABVP.

After that, she joined the BJP's youth wing and learnt the grind of politics there. After several years there, she was made the spokesperson of the BJP's Delhi unit.

Even though Sharma lost the 2015 Delhi polls to Kejriwal by over 31,000 votes, she became popular in the BJP circle. When JP Nadda became BJP national president, Sharma was made the party's national spokesperson.

During debates on TV channels, Sharma appeared as a firebrand spokesperson and a strong votary of Hindutva, PTI reported.

In recent months, she had her hands full, with BJP giving her several important assignments. Sharma was made media coordination in-charge during the Uttarakhand assembly polls. Recently, she also addressed the training camp of BJP's women wing on media and communication.

Sharma was suspended from the BJP on Sunday after she allegedly made insulting remarks against Prophet Mohammad during a TV debate that saw massive protests in Uttar Pradesh's Kanpur.
