'Waris Punjab De' Head Amritpal Singh Filed Nomination For Lok Sabha Elections: Punjab Govt Tells HC

Amritpal Singh, detained under NSA, moved the high court seeking directions to the Punjab government, Centre and Election Commission to make arrangements for him to file his nominations

The Punjab Government has told the Punjab & Haryana High Court that it has facilitated Waris Punjab De' head Amritpal Singh to file his nomination for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. Amritpal Singh is currently detained under the National Security Act (NSA) and he had moved the high court seeking directions to the Punjab government, Centre and Election Commission to release him for seven day or make arrangements for him to file his nomination form for contesting the 2024 elections from Sri Khadoor Sahib Constituency.

After considering Punjab government's reply the high court said that since the prayers made in the petition have been fulfilled the ple becomes infructuous, the livelaw reported.

According to the report, the high court was informed that two sets of nomination forms and other paper work were filed and signed by Singh on May 9.

Singh was arrested along with 9 others in April last year under the stringent NSA after his supporters created ruckus inside a police station in Ajnala and clashed with police over the release of one of his aides.

Singh in his petition stated that his father Tarsem Singh has written letters to Punjab's Chief Electoral Officer as well as Amritsar's District Magistrate to provide guidelines for him to file his nomination. He further alleged that even though the Punjab poll chief had written a letter directing for facilitating his nomination, the Punjab govt and District Magistrate of Amritsar deliberately did not issued any further instructions in order to delay and make sure that the petitioner is not able to file his nomination to contest Lok Sabha Election.

A Khalistani sympathiser, Singh was arrested in Punjab's Moga after being on run for over a month by switching vehicles and changing appearances.
