Waqf Amendment Bill Live Updates: The Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025 will be tabled in Rajya Sabha on Thursday after being passed by Lok Sabha after midnight following 12 hours of intense debate witnessing a faceoff between the ruling NDA and Opposition.
The contentious Bill was passed in Lok Sabha by division of votes with 288 votes in favour of the legislation and 232 against it. All the amendments moved by the oppoisition MPs were rejected by voice votes as the Bill was passed.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah accused the opposition of using the issue for its benefit to consolidate the vote bank by intimidating minorities and spreading confusion.
He said that there was no provision to include any non-Muslims among those who run religious institutions and the NDA government is not going to do it either.
Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, while replying to the debate said there is no place in the world safer than India for minorities. He said even a minuscule minority community like the Parsis are safe in India and all minorities here live with pride.
Meanwhile, the Opposition launched an all-out attack on the NDA-ruled Centre over the Bill with Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi saying the INDIA bloc will oppose the proposed changes to the Waqf law.
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav claimed that the Bill was a ploy by the BJP for polarisation following its reverses in the 2024 Lok Sabha polls.
AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi staged a symbolic protest by tearing up the copy of the Bill.
Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi termed the Waqf Bill a weapon, aimed at marginalising Muslims and usurping their personal laws and property rights.
"This attack on the Constitution by the RSS, BJP and their allies is aimed at Muslims today but sets a precedent to target other communities in the future," he said.

BJP MP Sudhanshu Trivedi said that we have given this Bill- ‘UMEED’ but some people dreamt of ‘UMAH’. ‘UMAH’ means an entire Islamic nation. People who wanted ‘UMEED’ are seeing the ray of hope; however, those who wanted ‘UMAH’ can be seen disappointed, he said.
