VS Achuthanandan Death: The people of Kerala bid a solemn farewell to VS Achuthanandan, one of the last stalwarts of India’s Communist movement, as his mortal remains were placed for public homage at the Durbar Hall of the state Secretariat on Tuesday. A statewide public holiday was declared, with educational institutions, government offices and public sector establishments closed in honour of the former Chief Minister. The final journey to Alappuzha, his native district, will begin at 3 PM on Wednesday, where the cremation will take place with state honours on Wednesday.

Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, along with senior CPI(M) leaders including MV Govindan, MA Baby, and Prakash Karat, paid floral tributes to Achuthanandan’s body, which was earlier brought from his residence in Paravur.

On Monday night, an emotional outpouring was witnessed at the AKG Centre, the former headquarters of the CPI(M), where thousands gathered late into the evening. Moved by memories of the veteran, people from all walks of life—students, elders, workers—braved the night to salute a leader they saw as the conscience of Kerala's Left.

The air was heavy with emotion and respect as mourners raised red salutes, honouring the uncompromising life and legacy of a leader who remained firmly rooted in his ideology till the very end.

VS Achuthanandan: A Life Of Unwavering Commitment

Born on October 20, 1923, in the coastal village of Punnapra, Alappuzha, Velikkakathu Sankaran Achuthanandan’s journey was forged in hardship. From a struggling orphaned child to a trade unionist, he rose to become a towering political figure—serving as Kerala’s Chief Minister (2006–2011), Leader of the Opposition, and a seven-time MLA.

His contributions to land reform, anti-corruption initiatives and social equity earned him immense respect across party lines.
